NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE MARIE POLICE SERVICE

*************************
This morning at approximately 9:45 a.m. a member of the public brought an explosive device to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Building which he had recently found on his property.

The individual believed the item had been there for many years and was bringing it for safe disposal.

After initial contact with officers at the front of the building the device was left at the front of the building, the immediate area evacuated, and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Explosive Disposal Unit attended to remove the device.

A safe removal of the device occurred and the item was secured.

Examination of the device after retrieval as well as consultation with the Canadian Armed Forces revealed that the device, which was a grenade, was inert.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police would like to ask members of the public who happen upon, locate, or believe they are dealing with an object that may be explosive to leave it in its place, evacuate the immediate area and contact the police to attend your location to remove the object.

It is possible that many devices, even those that appear to be stable may not be. The police are equipped with all necessary equipment and training to safely remove and diffuse explosive devices.
