Three teachers from Korah Collegiate's International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme are headed to Florida this June for training.

At last night's Algoma District School Board meeting, trustees voted to support the special training for Craig Elliot, Colleen Duggan and Christa Prophet.

The trio is due for some upgrading and this year the training takes place in St. Petersburg, Florida, said Superintendent Bob Cole.

"The IB program requires, as part of its accreditation program, that teachers be trained on a regular basis in order to ensure high quality of teaching and high academic standards," Cole told the board. "Also of note, Canada ranked highest in the world for its IB scores."

Cole said the program is a very intensive and demanding two-year, pre-university course of study that's recognized by universities worldwide.

He said the curriculum concentrates mainly in math and science but also includes world studies and character-building extracurricular activities.
