Weekend fires

On the morning of June 16, at approximately 9 a.m., Sault Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 400 block of John St. Upon arrival at this residence firefighters witnessed smoke venting from the eaves and roof vents.

Firefighters advanced a hose line and extinguished the fire in a second floor bedroom.

The fire caused severe heat and smoke damage to the second floor.

The residents of the home safely escaped.

Investigation revealed the cause of the fire was a result of a child playing with matches.

Fire Services would like to remind parents to keep matches and lighters safely out of reach of children.

On the afternoon of June 16, at approximately 4 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 100 block of Goulais Avenue.

Upon arrival, the occupant of the home directed firefighters to the basement level, where they discovered lint behind a dryer on fire.

The fire caused light smoke damage throughout the basement.

Further investigation revealed an improper dryer venting connection and lack of maintenance as the cause of this fire.

The Fire Service would like to remind the public to regularly clean in and around clothes dryers, specifically lint traps.
