LAKE SUPERIOR STATE UNIVERSITY
************************* Treyce Sanderson of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, confronts a feisty crawfish he netted from the Charlotte River yesterday during Lake Superior University's fish science camp.
The weeklong camp sampled two lakes and three streams using seines, electro-fishing, and minnow traps deployed under the auspices of LSSU fisheries professor Geoff Steinhart.
Kids learned how the shape of a fish reveals what it eats, where it lives, and how it survives.
They also tagged fish, estimated population sizes, ran forensic diet analysis by identifying partially-digested bones, and figured out the age of fish by examining scales and ear bones (otoliths).
