Local schools and businesses are stepping forward to help with Pedals for Possibilities, a new fundraising campaign announced by United Way Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District in January.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Constable Sonny Spina, who wears badge number 283, will cycle 283 kilometres over two days (May 16 and 17) in an effort to raise $283,000.
Brianne Veale, United Way Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District fundraising manager, announced St. Mary’s College donated $5,000 from its Heaven Cent Campaign toward Pedals for Possibilities on Tuesday.
In addition, Veale announced Thursday Croatian Corner owners Christopher and Erin Tomas will be donating five per cent of every purchase made at their eatery, located at 188 Bruce Street, from March 1 to May 17 to the Pedals campaign.
The first day of Spina’s cycling adventure will see him take part in events in Wawa and Elliot Lake, while day two will see him back in the Sault, where he plans to cycle a total of 95 kilometres with stops at all local schools.
Veale told SooToday in January $26,830 had already been donated by campaign sponsors.
The United Way funds 22 programs over 14 agencies that have a direct impact in reducing poverty within the Sault and Algoma area.
