************************** Special drug education program

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is once again presenting a drug safety and education program to local Grade 6 students.

This will be the 14th time that the service has committed to bringing the safety program to area kids.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will present each Grade 6 student with a copy of the 145-page handbook, Drug Safety, which is produced by Gateway Community Safety Net.

The book is widely used to educate and increase awareness of substance abuse.

In addition to educating youth, the materials are also a valuable family resource.

Children learn effective strategies to resist peer pressure tactics, while parents receive tips to help keep their kids stay drug-free.

Important resource contacts and information are contained inside.

Also included is an educational DVD that features animated characters, interactive games, and quizzes.

It connects to the Community Safety Net web site, where kids can enter online contests and win great prizes.

The police are finding that this program provides young people in our service area with effective tools to resist drug abuse.

The book offers parents practical ideas on raising drug-free children as well.

The materials have been provided thanks to the generous support of 120 local businesses and organizations which are listed in the drug safety booklet.

We also thank the Algoma District School Board and the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board for their support and partnership.

Together with these agencies we have been able to establish the ABCD (Action for Building a Community that is Drug Free) to target drugs that are being brought into our schools.

The Drug Safety handbooks along with Project ABCD are examples of the community approach these partnered agencies have taken to protect our youth.

We thank all the local businesses and organizations for there tremendous support and helping this program remain a great success.
