Paramedics collect food, cash for local soup kitchen (5 photos)

Helping the Hungry food drive brings goodwill to Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre

Roughly 20 local paramedics volunteered their time Saturday in order to collect cash and non-perishable food donations at two locations for the annual ‘Helping the Hungry’ food drive.

Paramedics were seen outside of Food Basics on Trunk Road and Joe’s No Frills on Korah Road filling up ambulances with the donated food, which was personally delivered to the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre by paramedics late Saturday afternoon.

“We decided to do this just as a way to help support the soup kitchen, because this time of the year they see an increase in the number of people that are using the services, and it’s kind of our way of giving back to the community,” said paramedic Brian Haines.

The Helping the Hungry food drive has collected more than 13,000 lbs. of food and raised more than $22,000 for the local soup kitchen since the food drive began in 2012.
