In a police action evoking memories of the 1995 standoff at Ipperwash, Ontario Provincial Police carried out a pre-dawn raid in Caledonia (near Hamilton) this morning, evicting aboriginal protesters who were occupying a construction site.

Hamilton TV station CHCH is reporting that police swarmed the site with drawn guns, Tasers and tear gas cannons.

Six Nations protesters have been occupying the housing project since late February, arguing that it was part of a 1784 land grant.

Provincial and federal authorities say the property was surrendered in 1841.
