Ontario reports 2,320 new COVID cases Wednesday

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,320 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 12). 

Today's report includes 3,477 recoveries and 32 new deaths.

The deaths reported today include one person between 20 and 39 years old, five people between 40 and 59 years old, 18 people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 139 new hospitalizations and 33 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 12 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

• 29,962 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 31,151 reported yesterday. 
• 1,673 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,782 reported yesterday. 
• There are 776 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 802 yesterday) and 559 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 568 reported yesterday).
• The province reported 45,681 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 6.4 per cent positivity rate.
• Another 28,174 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.6 million tests have been completed.
• Of the new cases reported today, 712 are from Toronto, 452 cases are from Peel, 157 are from York Region, and 55 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
• Today's cases include 390 individuals aged 19 and under, 983 people between 20 and 39 years old, 572 people between 40 and 59 years old, 252 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 35 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

• There were 140,785 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 11, which is up from 112,103 given on May 10.
• As of 6 p.m. on May 11, the province reported 6,491,666 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
• In total, 402,258 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 499,412 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 461,076 recoveries and 8,374 deaths, of which 3,936 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,359.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 139.4 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 14.8 per cent from last week (April 26 to May 2).

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

• Algoma Public Health: 355 cases, weekly rate of  8.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 354 cases. There are 22 known active cases. 
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 389 cases, weekly rate of 23.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 391 cases. There are 30 known active cases. 
• Porcupine Health Unit: 747 cases, weekly rate of 87.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 740 cases. There are 142 known active cases.
• Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,002 cases, weekly rate of 22.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,024 cases. There are 79 known active cases. 
• Timiskaming Health Unit: 197 cases, weekly rate of 36.7 cases per 100,000 people. There are 10 known active cases. 
• Northwestern Health Unit: 1,014 cases, weekly rate of 58.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,016 cases. There are 47 known active cases.
• Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,151 cases, weekly rate of 22.7 cases per 100,000 people. There are 31 known active cases.
