One new COVID-related death in Algoma, hospitalizations up slightly: APH

There have been 41 COVID-related deaths in Algoma since the start of the pandemic and 21 since January 1

Algoma Public Health is reporting the 41st COVID-19 death in the Algoma region.

The death is also the 21st related to COVID since Jan. 1 in the region.

Per APH policy, further details on the death were not disclosed.

The number of hospitalizations in Algoma has risen slightly in the latest update from APH.

The latest numbers from APH show that the number of hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 is up by two as of Friday afternoon to a total of 16.

The number of patients admitted for COVID-related reasons did drop by one to four while the number of ICU patients with confirmed COVID-19 is down by three to two.

APH is also reporting that the number of ICU patients admitted for COVID-related reasons also dropped and is now at one.

The number of active cases in the region is currently 378, which is down by 37 from Thursday's report. 

There are two additional active cases in the region that are non-Algoma residents who are temporarily in the region.

The number of confirmed cases in Algoma is up by 46, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the region to 6,037 since the start of the pandemic and 3,883 since the beginning of 2022.

The number of resolved cases in Friday's update rose by 83 to a total of 5,659.

Note: As of Dec. 31, 2021, the province has limited COVID-19 PCR testing to the highest risk populations. Furthermore, some people with mild or asymptomatic infection may not seek testing. Algoma Public Health states that the numbers of confirmed cases are an underestimate of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in the Algoma region.
