One dead in Manitoulin crash

************************* Fatal motor vehicle collision

LITTLE CURRENT, ON – On Sunday July 25 at approximately 10 a.m., the Manitoulin Island OPP detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 540 at McLean’s Mountain Road, Howland Township that took the life of the male driver.

As a result of the collision, Jerry Polornik, age 79, of Blenheim, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

She was later released.

The deceased was traveling on Highway 540 when the vehicle, for unknown reasons at this time, left the roadway striking the ditch.

The road and weather conditions at the time of the incident are described as being dry and clear.

The collision is still under the investigation by the Manitoulin Island OPP detachment and the North East Region technical traffic collision investigation unit.

The detachment commander, Staff Sergeant Bruce McCullagh indicated that the preliminary results of a post mortem examination indicate a medical condition may have contributed to the collision.
