On May 6, a big lime green thingamabobber will be delivered to your home

If you place your giant lime green thingamabobber within three feet of another giant thingamabobber, trash collectors will take a picture of the too-close thingamabobbers and refuse to empty them

Starting July 2, your trash must be placed in one of these snazzy new roll-out carts. David Helwig/SooToday

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story described the new garbage bins as being yellow. We then compromised by describing them as yellowish green. However, upon further reflection we are now willing to admit that these new bins are clearly lime green and have been all along.

What's lime green and holds 240 litres and will be delivered to your home on May 6. 2019?

Your brand new GFL Environmental trash cart, that's what!

Similar in size and design to the Sault's existing blue recycling carts, the new roll-out garbage containers come with a host of new rules.

One important thing to know is that the collection trucks can't lift roll-out carts that are within three feet of any other cart.

If you don't follow the new rules, trash collectors will slap a rejection sticker on your cart and refuse to empty it until the following week.

To cut down on unnecessary arguments over cart placement, all collection vehicles will now be equipped with cameras to photograph each trash pick-up location.

The new carts must be used starting July 2.

Later this month, GFL and the city will start an education campaign using the city website, videos and mail-outs.

Here are the Sault's seven commandments of trash collection, as laid out in the new waste management bylaw:

  • for collection, lid must be closed and wheels and handle must be facing the dwelling
  • location of curbside placement depending on type of roadway
  • roll-out carts must be accessible  parked vehicles, snowbanks, basketball nets, etc. must not obstruct cart collection, and roll-out cart shall not be placed under low hanging wires
  • roll-out carts shall be placed one metre apart – preferably on opposite sides of the driveway
  • roll-out carts shall not be placed on top of snow banks or other steep slopes
  • for curbside collection to occur, roll-out carts shall be used
  • if more waste is required to be put out, then bag tags shall be used on bags beyond the limit of the cart and placed beside the roll-out cart

Approximately 7,500 addresses will have their trash picked up on different days.

Notices of the new routes will be provided to affected locations and the information will also be available on the city's website.

Larger, 360-litre carts will be provided for multi-family dwellings and industrial, commercial and institutional users.

Roll-out trash carts must be placed at curbside by 7 a.m. on collection day and must be removed by 7 p.m.
