The Chinese skaters who won bronze medals behind Canada's Jamie Sale and David Pelletier at Monday night's controversial Olympic pairs competition will perform Apr. 18 at Sault Memorial Gardens.

Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao (both shown at left) will be part of the PharmAssist Skate the Nation tour, as will American skaters Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman, who placed fifth in the Olympic final.

Shen and Zhao, who have previously won four Chinese championships and two world silver medals, tried Monday to be the first team in Olympic history to successfully land a throw-quad salchow.

In this move, done only by the Chinese, Shen is thrown into the air, turns four full times and lands on the blade of her right skate.

It took 44 attempts before Shen landed successfully at practice. The pair say they can now complete the manoeuvre about half of the time.

Monday night was not one of those times. The pair stumbled and took bronze.

The Canadians, Sale and Pelletier, skated flawlessly and were shocked when the judges awarded gold to the Russians, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze.

On Tuesday, the International Skating Union announced an inquiry into the controversial judging.

Tickets for the Apr. 18 event are $45 and can be obtained at the Sault Memorial Gardens box office (759-5251).
