OPP NEWS RELEASE
************************* Some people are not getting the message
Sault Ste. Marie Detachment and traffic and marine officers have issued 19 seat belt charges in the first two days of the provincial spring seat belt campaign.
Of the charges laid, nine were for passengers in the vehicles not wearing their seat belts.
If a vehicle gets into an accident, the unrestrained passenger can become a missile injuring or killing other people in the car.
High speeds are not necessary for this to occur.
Officers have checked in excess of 800 vehicles and have laid 20 other charges, mostly for speeding in the past two days.
The spring campaign will run until April 28, but officers will continue to aggressively enforce seat belt violations all year round.
Every year, needless deaths and injuries occur because people chose not to buckle up.
Society as a whole pays also pays the costs for these needless injuries and deaths.
