In a press release issued today, Sears Canada says its full-line store in Sault Ste. Marie is among those that are anticipated to close.

The company is closing 20 full-line stores, including the Sault location, as well as 15 Sears Home, 10 Sears Outlet and 14 Sears Hometown stores.

As a result, some 2,900 positions will be cut across the retail locations and at Sears head office in Toronto.

Sears has been the anchor store at Station Mall since the mall opened in 1973.

Sears Canada announced today it is seeking court protection from its creditors in order to restructure its business.

"The specific timing of the store closings has not yet been finalized. All other Sears Canada stores and the Sears e-commerce website, www.sears.ca, continue to be open for business," said the press release.

SooToday will have more on this story shortly . . .
