Oakville senior wins $10 million lottery jackpot

TORONTO, March 16 - It wasn't until Oakville resident Donald MacDonald overheard a clerk at a local shopping centre mention that someone in Oakville had a winning ticket for the $10 million jackpot that he decided to check his weekly Lotto Maxticket.

When he got home and started going over the numbers, he realized that he had a match for all seven numbers and was holding the golden ticket.

"I took it into the store, but I had the clerk scan all my other $2 tickets first. When I handed her the Lotto Max ticket, she noticed I had circled the winning combo in coloured pencil, and started to get excited," said the soft spoken 78-year-old. "It wasn't until she scanned it and the machine said 'winner' that we confirmed I had won the $10 million jackpot."

MacDonald was born in Montreal but has lived in Oakville since 1977.

He is a proud participant and active volunteer with the Optimist Club of Oakville, helping young people in the community.

MacDonald retired from a career in the Treasury department of Canadian Pacific, a job that took him overseas and around the continent over many decades.

"I'm going to use some of my winnings to go back to Europe," said MacDonald. "I travelled there frequently during my career but I haven't been overseas since 1986. I still find it such an interesting place to visit."

In the mid-1960s MacDonald worked as a goal judge for the NHL and rubbed shoulders with some of the great Canadian hockey legends.

MacDonald recently donated a signed puck from Maurice Richard to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The winning ticket was bought at The Lottery Stop, on Rebecca Street in Oakville, Ontario.
