Fee ranges at the Fifth Line landfill site will change next week.

But you won’t necessarily pay more.

Future costs will depend on how much you dump.

The City is lowering the upper weight limit.

The current 500-kilogram limit will drop to 300 kilograms.

So, drive in this week with 350 kilograms and you’ll pay $6.

Take in the same load after Canada Day and you’ll pay more.

The following City of Sault Ste. Marie news release elaborates.

Readers wishing to convert the meanures should know that 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds.

************************* SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - In an effort to ensure the long-term sustainability of the City’s Fifth Line landfill site, a new fee structure and weighing method has been introduced.

Effective Tuesday, July 3, 2007, a flat rate of $6 will be charged at the gate for all loads of up to 300 kg.

A pro-rated charge of $65/tonne will be applied to loads in excess of 300 kg.

For example, a load weighing 350 kg will be subject to a fee of $9.25 ($6 for the first 300 kg and $3.25 for the additional 50 kg).

In addition to the new fee structure, two new digital scales have been installed to improve efficiency and weight accuracy.

Vehicles will now cross a weigh scale upon entering and again upon exiting the facility.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks the public for your patience and co-operation while upgrades have taken place.

Keep up the good work – Reduce – Reuse – Recycle!
