McGuinty government boosting economy; creating jobs

A new multi-purpose centre at Serpent River First Nation will create new jobs and increase recreation and economic opportunities in the community.

With support from the Province, the First Nation, located near the village of Cutler on Highway 17, is constructing a multi-purpose centre that will be used for social, educational, sporting and cultural activities.

It will also offer programs for local seniors and youth.

Investing in Northern Ontario communities is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to grow the economy by creating good jobs for families in the face of global economic uncertainty.

Quotes

“We are proud to support the community in building a modern multi-purpose centre that will enhance the quality of life of First Nation members for years to come, with a place to gather, attend special events and train for jobs.” - Rick Bartolucci, minister of northern development and mines, and chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)

“I’m pleased that the Serpent River First Nation will benefit from the range of services and activities offered by this new facility. The centre will have a positive impact for the community both socially and economically.” - Kathleen Wynne, minister of Aboriginal affairs

Quick facts

Ontario is supporting this project through the NOHFC’s Infrastructure and Community Development Program.

The 15,000-square foot building will include three modular multi-purpose spaces to accommodate many uses.

Every summer, the Serpent River First Nation Powwow attracts some 1,000 participants for its traditional gathering that features native song, dance, crafts and food.
