New fast-food restaurant coming to the Sault

Prairie Donair specializes in Middle Eastern cuisine

Restaurant owners Jay and Ketan Patel are putting the final touches on the Sault's newest takeout option.

The two friends are excited to present Prairie Donair, a fast-food chain with a wide selection of Middle Eastern cuisine.

There are several establishments across the country, but the future Second Line West location will make the first one in Ontario.

The menu features a variety of healthy and nutritious options, from falafel and shawarma to platters and salads. Vegan items are also available.

Co-owner Jay Patel says they're hoping to have the restaurant up and running by the end of the month.

"It's very exciting," he says. "Lots of people are contacting us and they're really excited to try it out. We're pretty much ready to go."

The Patels moved to the Sault in December 2019 and have been running Fat Bastard Burrito in the Churchill Plaza ever since.

Jay Patel says they tried to open Prairie Donair last year, but the pandemic halted their plans. Despite the delay, Patel senses the restaurant could be a popular choice among locals when they open at the end of May.

"This is a good opportunity for business," he says. Northern Ontario restaurants are growing. It's also nice that we're connected to the U.S. border. We feel we can grow the business here."

Prairie Donair will offer dine-in and takeout, and delivery will also be available on several mobile apps including Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats, and Door Dash.

And what's a donair?

It is a type of sandwich or wrap that originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The meat is made with spiced beef or lamb that is roasted on a spit and then sliced into thin strips.
