SUDBURY, ON – Officers of the Sudbury OPP detachment and Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are continuing their investigation of a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred earlier today on Highway 17 near Beaver Lake, east of Nairn Centre within the region of Greater Sudbury.

Shortly after noon, a pickup truck travelling eastbound came around a right-hand bend on the roadway and crossed the centre line.

A westbound vehicle managed to take evasive action and avoided a collision.

The pickup truck, however, continued eastbound in the oncoming lane colliding head on with a westbound tractor trailer.

As a result of the collision, the two occupants of the pickup truck, Martin Deon and Maria Deon, both 86 years of age of Sudbury, were killed.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 50-year-old woman from the Ottawa area, was not injured in the collision.

Road and weather conditions were not a factor in the collision.

Charges are not anticipated as a result of this collision.

Highway 17 was completely re-opened to traffic as of 5 p.m.

Motorists can expect Highway 17 to be completely closed once again between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday while the tractor-trailer is removed from the ditch.

Light traffic will be rerouted during these hours, however, tractor trailers and other heavy vehicles will not be allowed to reroute during this time period.
