Name released in fatal Highway 17 crash (update)

SUDBURY – On June 29, 2014 at 11:45 p.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 17 (just west of the Vermillion River Bridge) in the City of Greater Sudbury.

Investigation revealed that a westbound car drove off the roadway into the centre median. 

The car subsequently struck a rock cut and rolled over.  

The male driver and lone occupant was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Investigation revealed he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver has been identified as Donald James McDONELL, age 24 of Elliot Lake, ON.

An OPP Collision Reconstructionist and a Technical Traffic Collision Investigator attended the scene and are assisting with the investigation.

The westbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed until 5 a.m. while officers completed their investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
