More than 100 vintage snowmobiles in Sylvan Valley for myeloma fundraiser (14 photos)

Sylvan Valley Retro Ride brings out families, classic snowmobile enthusiasts to raise money for Myeloma Canada

Riders registered more than 100 vintage snowmobiles for the 14th annual Sylvan Valley Retro Ride, which saw owners of classic sleds built before 1980 bring their machines out Saturday for a day in the snow.

Organizer Pam Orchard says the event is a fundraiser for Myeloma Canada, with proceeds going toward an annual donation to the Myeloma March each fall.

On top of funds raised through rider registration, 125 prizes - all donated by area businesses - were up for grabs through draws during Saturday's fundraiser.

“Multiple myeloma is not a well-known cancer, so it doesn’t get very much attention,” Orchard told SooToday, while registering riders at the Sylvan Valley Hall. “Most of the money that we get for multiple myeloma is donated to research."

“It’s non-curable at the moment, and they are looking for a cure. I have it, and luckily I’m not a person who’s affected as much as some people are,” she continued. “It’s a very painful disease, and about 45 people in the Sault have it - so they’re all living with various stages.”

The Sylvan Valley Retro Ride brings in anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 for myeloma research each year.
