U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak - whose district includes the Michigan Soo - sees potential benefits in relocating Guatanamo Bay’s detainees to the Upper Peninsula.
In fact, he suggested such a move in a letter to President Barack Obama last February.
Stupak believes a former prison 90 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge could house Gitmo’s suspected terrorists.
But the Democrat and former sheriff won't be actively promoting the idea unless other politicians publicly endorse the concept.
And many clearly oppose such a scheme.
Debate about the U.P. becoming Guantanamo North took place Friday during a conference on Mackinac Island.
