Upward trend continues in Applied Level Testing

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce continued improvement in the results of Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Applied Level mathematics testing.

In the Applied Level program, 49 percent of all Grade 9 students achieved at or above the provincial standard which is an increase of 6 percent from last year and 5 percent higher than the provincial average.

Over a five-year period, the board’s Applied Level test results have improved by 16 percent.

“The board put in place a number of initiatives, such as math journals and the Red, Yellow, Green strategy, to improve student comprehension in Applied Level Mathematics. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the administration, principals and mathematics teachers, we continue to see strong results,” said Superintendent of Education Maria Esposito.

In the Academic program, 81 percent of students tested produced results at or above the provincial standard which is slightly below the provincial average.

“While our results at this level remain strong we will continue to explore opportunities to improve student success. As a team, we will evaluate the detailed test results to get a complete picture of what is required to give our students the tools to succeed in Academic Level mathematics,” said Esposito.

There were 50 students with Special Education Needs who completed the EQAO testing.

Of the 34 students at the applied level who completed the test, 26 pecent achieved the provincial standard.

At the Academic Level, 59 percent achieved the provincial standard.

EQAO testing is one tool that helps board and school teams identify areas of student strengths, target areas requiring support and plan for improvement.

EQAO data is examined together with other achievement information such as teacher observations, assessments and report card data in order to get a complete picture of student skills, abilities and knowledge.

Every year students in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10 across Ontario participate in EQAO testing.

The HSCDSB has a dedicated team of professionals constantly monitoring the achievement of approximately 5,000 students in our 25 schools.
