Okay, Environment Canada insists that big blow last night in Sault Ste. Marie wasn't a twister.

It was just a cold front sweeping through Northern Ontario on its way to Quebec later today.

But it was enough to give some of us a scare.

"I was at Pointe Des Chenes last night when the wind storm hit," reports local architect David Ellis. "As I was leaving, I saw what looked like a funnel cloud quite high up in the sky and for a very short period of time a blue-and-purple glow in the sky. I asked about damage that could be observed this morning and was told a very large six-burner barbecue was thrown about six metres off the deck and a large healthy 10-metre high pine tree was blown down."

"Around 9:20 p.m. my husband and I were watching TV when all of a sudden it sounded like something was coming through the back of our house," adds a faithful SooToday.com reader who lives on Campbell Avenue. "My husband went to check it out by looking out the back window, it was then that he noticed our shed was no longer in the back. The shed was even held down with cement blocks and the wind was able to still pick it up and move it. Our neighbour called to tell us that the shed was now in the front yard. It had blown down the yard, hitting and damaging the neighbour's car along with ours. Talk about freaky weather on Devil's Night!

"We are also on Wellington Street East, across from the Dunn," writes Canchaser on SooToday.com's News Response forum. "It happened so fast we didn't even know what happnened! Our windows even came in on us! Such a powerful wind - it was here and gone so fast!"

Here's a selection of other comments posted today on our News Response forum: Skipper Dave: "Wasn't a tornado? Well it shook this house, lifted a few shingles and scared the bejessus out of us! That's got to be an indicator of something out of the norm I think? But hey who are we to argue with the weather people. They have such a stellar track record?"

DutchTouch: "At one point last night I almost made tracks for the basement. I'm sure there are no shingles left on the house!"

Flyhawk25: "I live two blocks from the other reader. Maybe it wasn't a tornado but I heard the same sound - like a jet engine or a train climbing a grade - and was thankful I'm in a brick-and-steel apartment building. Whatever it was I'm glad the kids weren't out getting treats."

Sunnidelight: "I happened to be outside (dogs) when the burst went by. It lifted my dog off the ground as he pooped. I almost fell over laughing as the old saying 'It scared the s*it out of...' came to mind! I am not sure if he was lifted or jumped a foot off the ground because he was startled, but it sure was one of the funniest things I have ever seen."

Arch44: "Last night's wind was strong enough to destroy my canopy, mounted to my deck with lag bolts. It actually snapped the metal apart at the welds."
