NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

************************* Forest fire situation update - East Fire Region

August 23, 2010

No new fires were reported by late in the afternoon August 23.

There were no new fires reported over the weekend either.

Cochrane continues to monitor four fires and Hearst Fire 9 is under control at 4.5 ha.

The forest fire hazard remains low to moderate for most of the region.

For areas such as Manitouwadge, Hearst, Cochrane, Wawa, Hornepayne that have weather more similar to Northwestern Ontario the forest fire hazard is moderate to high.

However, a low level jet will be making its way through these areas in the 24-48 hours, lowering the fire hazard.

Additional FireRangers crews and Division Supervisors will be heading to British Columbia tomorrow to join the already 251 personnel there.

More resources will be deployed later in the week as needed.

310-FIRE (3473) is the new, toll-free emergency forest fire reporting phone number across northern Ontario.

The number will operate north of the French and Mattawa rivers.
