CITY POLICE

NEWS RELEASE

******************* A motor vehicle collision was reported yesterday evening at approximately 9 p.m., involving a cyclist.

It is believed that an 11-year-old youth was riding a bicycle northbound on the west-side sidewalk of Pine Street.

A 1997 Mercury driven by 80-year-old Joseph Bradley of 1746 Queen Street East was traveling east bound on McNabb Street in the outside lane.

Mr. Bradley attempted to make a right hand turn onto Pine Street.

The vehicle struck the cyclist who was travelling from the sidewalk onto the roadway.

The cyclist did not make any attempt to stop.

The cyclist did not have a light on the bicycle and was not wearing a helmet.

The cyclist could not be charged as he was under the age of 12 years.

The mother of the cyclist has been charged with permiting a person under 16 on a bicycle without wearing a proper helmet under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The cyclist in this incident did not require medical attention but did suffer minor injuries.

City Police are advising motorists to be aware of cyclist on the streets and sidewalks.

Children under the age of 10 years are permitted to travel on the sidewalks.

Every person under the age of 16 years is required to wear a proper helmet.

There is a $60 fine for not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle and there is also a $60 fine for the guardian of a child under the age of 16 allowing that child to ride without a helmet.

Cyclists, like operators of motor vehicles, must obey all the Highway Traffic Act laws.
