Meet Sault Ste. Marie's City Cop of the Year

City Police Constable Steve Miron (shown) was one of four recipients of 2004 Police Services Awards presented today by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

The awards recognize Officers of the Year in four area police services: the Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Anishinabek Police Service, and Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Today's awards were presented at the Holiday Inn with about 180 Chamber of Commerce members and others in attendance.

Selection criteria included continued efforts in pursuit of excellence, high standards of performance and dedication, performance above and beyond the call of duty, community-mindedness and bravery.

The following is Constable Miron's commendation, as prepared by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service:

********************** Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Officer of the Year

Constable Steven Miron

Constable Steven Miron is one of 131 sworn Police Officers serving the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie.

He is currently assigned to Traffic Services within the Patrol Services Division of our Police Service.

Constable Miron was hired in November 1989 and he began his career in Patrol Services.

In January 1995 he was transferred to his current assignment in Traffic Services.

Constable Miron has participated in many training courses at the Ontario and Canadian Police Colleges.

He is a certified Radar Operator, Collision Reconstructionist, Police Vehicle Operations Instructor, and Snow Vehicle Permit Instructor.

As a Patrol Officer, he has investigated or assisted in the investigation of numerous collisions over a 15-year span.

As a Traffic Constable, he has investigated or assisted in approximately 2,000 collisions, many of which contained serious injuries.

He has also investigated four fatal collisions to date.

As a Traffic Officer, he has taught many courses at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service to fellow officers on such things has traffic laws, impaired drinking and driving laws, the Vehicle Impoundment Program, roadside screening devices, and alcohol ignition interlock devices.

As well, he has given lectures and seminars within Sault Ste. Marie on traffic safety, winter driving safety, snowmobile laws, and drinking and driving issues.

One of the main reasons that Constable Miron has been nominated for the Chamber of Commerce’s Police Officer of the Year award is his dedication and unwavering commitment to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Many of the lectures and seminars that he has given have often occurred on his own personal time.

He is an excellent example of giving back to the community in which he serves.

One such example was his volunteer participation in the Tim Horton’s "Earn A Bike Program" in which he volunteered 30 hours of his own time to assist less fortunate kids earn a bike by donating time in community service.

Constable Miron does not seek accolades for his accomplishments.

However, he is well known in our Community for his training of potential snowmobile operators on our trails and roads.

He is community-minded and his service to the members of our Community is certainly noteworthy.

It is our pleasure to add Constable Miron to the list of recipients of the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Officer of the Year Award from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
