************************* The Sault Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Lake Superior State University Political Science Club will be hosting a Meet the Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 26.

The Political Science Club and Chamber of Commerce have been co-sponsoring candidate forums for the past five years.

The forums provide the community with an opportunity to meet candidates running for local, state and national offices.

The 2010 forum will take place in the Lake Superior State University Walker Cisler Center – Conference Rooms (upper level). The 2010 Meet the Candidate Forum will focus on those individuals running for federal and state offices.

Candidates running for the 1st Congressional District have confirmed their attendance which include Gary McDowell, Dan Benishek and Glenn Wilson.

Also the candidates running for both state house and senate seats will be in attendance.

Those candidates include Bob Carr, Howard Walker running for the 37th Senate seat and Richard Timmer and Frank Foster running for the 107th State House of Representatives seat. “This year is a unique year for our district in that all three of these seats are open due to either retirements or term limits. This creates and environment where many of the candidates are unknown to local citizens. Citizens are very engaged this year and will be curious to meet candidates and to hear directly from them, said Leisa Mansfield, executive director Sault Area Chamber of Commerce. Meeting the candidates in person is the best way to understand the positions of all candidates and to help voters feel confident about their selections.” LSSU Political Science Club students will provide assistance during the event and Dr. Gary Johnson will serve as moderator.

The audience will be encouraged to submit written questions to the moderator who will then provide each candidate an opportunity to address the question.

Candidates will give brief opening and closing statements and have the chance to meet one-on-one with those in attendance. The forum begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26.

Parking is available in the visitor’s parking lot or in the lot behind the Cisler Center.
