SooToday.com received the following letter from Ward 5 City Council Candidate Mark Brown, responding to Jack Mandel, president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

***************************** I write in response to President Jack Mandel’s letter relating to Dr. Anthony DeLuco in SooToday.com on September 29.

If and when Dr. Anthony DeLuco applies for reinstatement I hope that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) will use the “beyond a shadow of a doubt” standard of proof rather than the “on the balance of probabilities” when it comes to Dr. DeLuco proving that he will never re-offend again.

Public safety is of utmost importance for us people who use the medical system here in Sault Ste. Marie, and I know and trust that the CPSO will do what is right to protect the public.

With no disrespect intended, President Mandel fails to inform the public that, according to the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), it is the duty of the college to ensure as a matter of public interest, that the people of Ontario have access to adequate numbers of regulated health professionals.

Sault Ste. Marie does not have access to adequate numbers of family doctors.

We have a very long waiting list for family doctors.

The petition simply asks that if and when Dr. DeLuco applies for reinstatement that a hearing be held at the earliest opportunity, and further, once all of the evidence is heard that the disciplinary committee makes its decision within days and weeks rather than months and years.

With respect, I ask that President Jack Mandel give the people of Sault Ste. Marie his personal assurance that once all the evidence is heard, if and when Dr. DeLuco applies for reinstatement, there will be a decision within days and weeks.

The health of Saultites depends on it.

Sincerely, Mark Brown   All Saultites, and especially those without a family doctor, are encouraged to come down to Queen Street in front of the Essar Centre on Saturday, October 2 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to sign the petition that asks the College of Physicians and Surgeons to make their decision as quickly and thoroughly as possible if and when Dr. DeLuco applies for reinstatement.
