McGuinty government seeks local input for poverty reduction strategy

SAULT STE. MARIE - David Orazietti, MPP announced today that on Monday, June 23, he will host a poverty reduction consultation session to receive constructive solutions to assist Sault Ste. Marie residents in need.

“This consultation will provide an opportunity for a diverse range of community members to draw on their expertise and experiences to formulate constructive solutions to reduce poverty in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Orazietti. “This initiative is part of our government’s continuing commitment to expand opportunities so that all Ontarians can reach their full potential.”

Monday’s poverty reduction consultation session will take place in the Russ Ramsay Room at City Hall from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

All Sault residents are welcome to participate, including representatives from service delivery agencies, the education sector, the local shelter, violence against women prevention groups, aboriginal groups, the local public health unit and the community at large.

The purpose of the session is to have a constructive, open and frank discussion with local experts and community members about how we can best work together to reduce poverty.

The province wants input from a local perspective on what is working well, what needs improvement and where gaps exist.

The government is also interested in local success stories and real solutions that have worked in Sault Ste. Marie.

Orazietti is hosting the poverty reduction session as both the local MPP and as a member of the McGuinty government’s Cabinet Committee on Poverty Reduction (CCPR).

The CCPR is working towards developing a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy with measures and targets to help Ontarians in need.

The committee is actively developing strategies to engage different levels of government, the business community, the non-profit sector and concerned citizens across the province to achieve its goals.

The McGuinty government has outlined six specific questions in our Growing Stronger Together engagement document.

These questions will help focus Monday’s discussion on solutions to reduce poverty in Sault Ste. Marie.

The questions can be found on the province’s new website.

The website also provides Sault residents unable to attend the consultation an opportunity to express their values, priorities and possible solutions for poverty reduction in the community.
