Luba Goy to celebrate Ukrainian culture in the Sault

Royal Canadian Air Farce star Luba Goy will perform in Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday, September 9 as part of the 90th anniversary celebration of St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Goy (pictured) is a Ukrainian-Canadian who became popular on CBC as part of the political comedy troupe.

She will join celebrants at the Marconi Hall for a Ukrainian-style dinner, providing entertainment along with Ukrainian dancers from Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury.

"This is a celebration of the Ukrainian faith and heritage," said Father Jaroslaw "Jerry" Lazoryk, pastor of St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church.

"We welcome the public to come celebrate with us," Father Jerry said.

Archbishop Lawrence Huculak will begin the celebration at 3 p.m. at St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

"Archbishop Huculak is the Archbishop of Winnipeg and metropolitan for all Ukrainian Catholics of Canada," said Father Jerry.

"The mass will be a unique, heavenly experience," he said.

"Our tradition in the Ukrainian Church is rooted in mysticism - every action of the Byzantine liturgy carries deep symbolism that has been passed down since the early church."

Come 5 p.m., the celebration will move to the Marconi Hall for a social hour featuring displays and a silent auction.

The Ukrainian-style dinner followed by entertainment featuring Goy and the Ukrainian dancers begins at 6 p.m.
