************************* LSSU presidential search committee looking at more than 60 candidates

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - The special committee to search out and nominate a new president for Lake Superior State University met for the fourth time on September 18 and reviewed more candidates.

The committee is still in the solicitation stage, taking candidate names from a variety of sources.

To date, the committee has considered 61 candidates.

"The primary source for candidates has been a two-month advertisement in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a mainstream journal of the higher education community," said Patrick K. Egan, member of the LSSU board of trustees and chair of the presidential search committee. "The advertisement will not continue in the next issue."

Egan said other sources have been the LSSU community, the Sault Ste. Marie community and a network of alumni and former residents who are aware of the search.

During the most recent committee meeting, members began a winnowing process, identifying those candidates they wish to continue investigating, and naming those who will not proceed to the next step.

Even as the committee seeks more information on several candidates, it will hold the door open for more applications and nominations and will make an announcement when it closes the candidate process.

"The committee has agreed to work at a deliberate pace, and has not set a deadline or expectations of a deadline. It will seek more information on certain candidates, moving them through an established process. At some point in the process, the committee may decide that it has the quality of candidates it seeks and make a recommendation on a group of finalists," Egan said, adding, "If the committee feels, after this initial process, that it has not found significant candidates, it will start the process over, and may, at that point, even consider re-visiting its decision not to use a professional search firm."

Names and contact information of committee members are available on the LSSU website through a link on the home page, lssu.edu, or directly at lssu.edu/presidentsearch
