NDP PARTY OF CANADA

*************************** Layton brings message of fairness to Northern Ontario

OTTAWA - After getting one step closer to securing $1 billion to help the unemployed on Tuesday, New Democrat leader Jack Layton will be in Northern Ontario on Saturday to meet with local workers and ask them what they need from the EI system.

Layton will be joined by MP Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie) for a roundtable with workers in Sault Ste. Marie, including workers from Tenaris Tubes, who have experienced multiple lay-offs since January.

In the afternoon, Layton will join New Democrat MPs Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay - Superior North) and John Rafferty (Thunder Bay - Rainy River) for a press conference on HST.

‘‘We’re working hard to get results for the people who elected us, and I want to hear from the people of Northern Ontario,’’ Layton said. ‘‘We need to make EI better, and we need to tell the Conservatives and the Liberals that it is wrong to slap an unfair tax on working families in Northern Ontario.’’
