Look who won a Nobby tonight!

Winners of the 21st Northern Ontario Business Awards were announced tonight in Timmins.

First launched in 1986, the awards program has become the largest annual gathering of its kind in Northern Ontario.

More than 400 business and opinion leaders from across the North celebrated the achievements of nine companies and individuals.

The Union Gas Essay Scholarship, worth $3,000, was also presented.

Mayor Tom Laughren co-hosted the evening gala with Northern Ontario Business publisher Patricia Mills.

The Northern Ontario Business Awards are designed to celebrate successful business throughout Northern Ontario.

The event rotates annually among the five major centres in Northern Ontario.

An independent panel of judges adjudicated more than 100 nominations from around Northern Ontario.

This year’s judges were Vicki Smith, owner of Sudbury’s Copy Copy; Steve Adams, former business owner and councillor in Timmins; Meriza George, deputy chief Nipissing First Nations; and Bruno Niederer, co-owner of Performance KIA in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.

Jacqueline Savoie, executive director of La Fondation du Collège Boréal was the judge for the Union Gas Essay Scholarship.

The Amazing Persona and their affiliated stations throughout the North will broadcast a special half-hour documentary highlighting all of this year’s award recipients on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 at 7 p.m. in Timmins and Sudbury.

It will also be seen on the Shaw Community Channel in Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, as well as Cogeco in North Bay.

The 22nd Annual Northern Ontario Business Awards 2008 will be held in North Bay on October 9, 2008, at the Best Western.
