NEWS RELEASE

KIWANIS CLUB OF LAKESHORE

************************** On Wednesday, October 12, the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore celebrated the 50th anniversary of its charter in 1961 at the Grand Gardens.

Outgoing President Thomas Brandstetter was celebrated for a successful year of new events, recruiting new members and for outstanding service to the community of Sault Ste. Marie.

Kiwanians past and present were on hand to join in the celebration of not just this past year, but of all 50 of the previous years with the history of the club’s past presidents and recipients of the Kiwanian of the Year Award.

Breaking from tradition, President Thomas selected two recipients for the 2010-2011 Kiwanian of the Year Award, Lua and Shane Turcotte.

Speaking to the hard work and dedication of an entire committee and ultimately the entire club, the Turcottes accepted the award based on the successful launch of the Kiwanis Invitational Walleye Tournament hosted this past July on the St. Marys River.

Looking forward, incoming President Rod Xilon accepted the gavel and announced that with the funds raised at the dinner, the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore would meet their pledge to support its district’s (Eastern Canada and Caribbean) campaign for children of the Caribbean affected by HIV/AIDS.

Xilon’s plans for 2011-2012 include continuing ongoing community service projects including the Camp Wakonda Summer Program, Kiwanis One Day Family Skate, Staples Back to School Program (which supplied almost $10,000 worth of school supplies to local children in need this year in both school boards), the Terrific Kids recognition program in partnership with Huron Superior Catholic District School Board and of course the second annual Kiwanis Invitational Walleye Tournament, scheduled this year for July 13-16, 2012.

For more information about joining the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore please contact us at 705-946-7915 or join us for lunch at noon every Wednesday at the Marconi Club.
