What does more than $5,000 damage to a football field look like?

SooToday.com sent Donna Hopper there today to check out the scene after vandals trashed it around 3:30 a.m. today.

"When I first arrived at Sir James Dunn school, the first thing I noticed was chunks of sod littering the track that circles the football field," Hopper reports.

"About 50 percent of the field is likely unusable due to the deep tire ruts that meander through it. It would appear that the vandals drove their vehicle into the goal post at the east end of the field, bending and twisting it," Hopper says.

"The school's outdoor equipment shed was also damaged. Ray Nelson and Sheri Gagne of the Algoma District School Board maintenance department, were onhand repairing the damage to the shed. They told me that one whole corner of the shed was ripped out and barely hanging on.

"Gagne told me that the grass crew had just finished preparing the field for the school's upcoming football season. There was a large group of football team hopefuls practicing on the undamaged portion of the field."

Police arrested a 15-year-old male and charged him with one count of possession of property obtained by crime and one count of mischief over $5,000.

They are seeking another, as-yet-unidentified male who fled from stolen GMC suburban vehicle on the field.

Meanwhile, Sault St. Marie Fire Services was called to the football field at White Pines Collegiate and Vocational School around 11:50 p.m. yesterday, where they found a 1990 GMC pickup truck, flipped onto its roof and burning.

A group of youth was seen fleeing the area.

Anybody with information about either occurrence is asked to contact City Police or Crime Stoppers at 942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477.
