Saultites are being encouraged to plant purple flowers in their gardens to raise awareness for ending violence against women.

It’s part of Freedom Sisters Sault Ste Marie’s annual Blooms for Change campaign.

“The colour purple is a symbol of courage, survival and honour,” said the organization in a news release. “It has become a symbol of awareness of ending violence against women.”

Participants can upload photos of their purple gardens, potted plants and single flowers to the Freedom Sisters Sault Ste Marie Facebook page for a chance to win a $100 gift card.

The contest closes August 31.
