NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE CONSERVATIVE ELECTORAL DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

************************* Tony Martin is on the wrong side of the issues again

Today Tony Martin stated that Canada is failing the test of leadership during these uncertain economic times at the G8 Summit.

Once again he misrepresents the facts.

The Conservative government has shown leadership, courage and creativity in tackling the challenges facing Canadian families.

The results are being lauded internationally.

BBC News economic editor Stephanie Flanders wrote Yesterday that “the best prepared award for going in to the crisis goes to Canada.”

While Tony Martin and Jack Layton continue to demonize the Canadian financial sector, Canada's banks have had no government bailouts.

The five banks that dominate Canada's banking sector instead have raised about $9 billion in equity since October.

Their shares have fallen, but not anywhere as severely as in other G8 economies.

They have not taken a dime from the public purse.

A strong financial sector is the backbone of any economy, which in turn protects and generates employment.

We look forward to debating Tony Martin on these issues.
