Local Jane’s Walk Festival quickly approaching

After the overwhelming success previous years in Sault Ste Marie, seeing hundreds of people participate in over a dozen walks, the local Jane’s Walk planning committee is excited to announce Jane’s Walk Festival SSM 2018, Friday, May 4 - Sunday, May 6.

Jane’s Walk is a series of neighbourhood walking tours that put people in touch with their environment. Since 2007, this international free walking festival seeks to better acquaint people with their neighbourhoods and each other and highlight personal accounts of how people use public spaces.

On Friday, May 4 - Sunday, May 6, over 1,000 walking tours will take place across six continents, 36 countries, and in approximately 200 communities. This year, Sault Ste. Marie will host its third annual series of Jane’s Walks.

Jane’s Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs who championed the interests of local residents at a time when scale models and grand visions of the future removed designers from the experience of the city by foot.

The walks help bring people together into strong and resourceful communities, cultivating belonging and encouraging civic leadership.

This year many amazing walks are being planned focusing on diverse topics such as wild foraging, history, architecture, civic issues, personal and family history, and food.

A full program of walks will be ready and available at Gore Street Cafe and other locations around the city in the next week, and ongoing information will be available on Facebook.

The festival will kick off with a screening of short documentaries about Jane Jacobs and her influence on Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The screening will be followed by an open discussion. Admission is by donation.
