SAULT COLLEGE

************************* Local daycare recognized with provincial award

SAULT STE. MARIE - (August 19) - All Star Children’s Services of Elliot Lake is one of five Ontario operations (four regional and one provincial) to receive a government award for excellence in apprenticeship training.

Recently, the daycare received the Minister’s Apprenticeship Employer Recognition award for Northern Ontario.

Lee-Ann Blondeau, employment consultant for Job Connect in Blind River, a division of the community employment services at Sault College, nominated the daycare centre for the award.

All Star Children’s Services is one facility she worked with on a regular basis to link apprentices to employers.

“We recognized the strength of this employer to take on the responsibility of training apprentices and offered them the opportunity to be recognized for their efforts,” says Blondeau.

Over the past ten years, the day care has trained 15 Early Childhood Educator apprentices from Espanola to Iron Bridge.

“Considering over 126 participants were nominated,” says Lyne Leblanc, chief executive officer of the daycare, “We are proud to be the only Northern Ontario childcare facility to actually win such an award.”

Leblanc stresses the importance of apprenticeship training to the future of her industry.

“Learning the technical aspects [of Early Childhood Education] is one thing, but the human aspect and hands on experience is what really matters.”

An awards luncheon was held on Friday June 19 at the Stone Ridge Golf course in Elliot Lake.
