Local athletes to compete in Provincial School Championships

Over 600 athletes and 200 coaches from Ontario will participate, many of them competing at the provincial level for the first time

OSHAWA - Special Olympics school athletes will be participating in the 2016 Provincial School Championships, June 1-3 at Durham College and Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex. 

Over 600 athletes and 200 coaches from Ontario will participate in this exciting event, many of them competing at the provincial level for the first time.

Chief Paul Martin, Durham Regional Police stated "We are excited to have Special Olympics major games back in Durham Region. Durham Regional Police have been long time supporters of the movement.  We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Region of Durham".

Special Olympics Ontario has over 21,000 registered athletes, with almost half being actively involved in school-based programs. 
 
"The School Championships is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the on-going success of programs in the school system.  For many students, it provides an opportunity to be part of a team and travel to competition" stated Glenn MacDonell, President & CEO, Special Olympics Ontario.
 
Sault Ste. Marie schools - White Pines Collegiate & Vocational School and Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School will compete in Soccer and Track & Field. 
Athletes will showcase the outstanding abilities, courage and drive, that continues to demonstrate the spirit of Special Olympics.
