Sault Ste. Marie will host the 2008 World Club Ringette Championships in November, City Council was advised tonight.
Teams from across Canada as well as two elite Finnish teams will participate in the event, councillors were told by Debbie Jo Linklater and Joe D'Angelo, event co-chairs.
Conceived in North Bay, Ontario in 1963, ringette has grown to a 50,000-participant sport in Canada with other organizations in the United States, France, Finland, Sweden and Russia.
The Sault Ringette Club was founded in 1983 and incorporated as an entity indepedent of lcoal hockey organizations in 2004.
The Sault club has experienced 45 percent growth in the past year and there are now 150 local athletes.
The game, which has rules similar to those of hockey, can be played by athletes as young as five years old.
