A life ring found earlier this month near the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula is not from the Edmund Fiztgerald, the Associated Press is reporting.
The worn letters "Edmund Fitzgerald" found on the ring were actually stencilled on it by a man who had a cabin near where the Eagle River enters Lake Superior, according to the man's daughter, Cynthia Edwards.
The man didn't intend to fool anyone, and did it simply to honour the famous shipwreck, the woman said.
She made the disclosure at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
Tom Farnquist, executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, said it appears more and more that the orange life preserver isn't from the Edmund Fitzgerald.
