A local elementary school is running strongly in a North America-wide competition that awards money for new playground equipment.

As of early this afternoon, Queen Elizabeth Public School stood second - and only slightly behind the leader - with nearly 4,500 online votes cast in support for its efforts to establish the MCpl. Scott Vernelli Playground on its site.

If the East End school winds up first, it will receive $5,000 in new equipment from KaBoom!, an organization dedicated to creating great playspaces.

SooToday.com readers can help keep things moving in the right direction by voting here every day until the end of the month.

The second-place finisher will get $3,000 and $1,000 will go to the third-place entrant.
