Lawnmower race gets on track

Popular Bruce Mines event runs next weekend with the Fall Fair

It all started about seven years ago when I started gathering info and feeling for interests about lawnmower racing, then four years ago we started planning for our first ever lawnmower race in the area.

The 2017 Bruce Mines fall fair ran our first race with seven tractors racing in the heavy horse ring, then in 2018 word got out, Laird Fair wanted to host a race as well as Runway park and some other venues.

Our 2018 Bruce Mines fall fair saw three times the tractors from our first year (approx. 24) again racing in the heavy horse ring.

We then realized if we were going to continue to have this exciting sport that was taking off like a wild fire, that we would have to build a track. Planning began right after the fair, with a huge help from Harv's Excavating for many hours of labor, equipment and trucking, Ontario Trap Rock and Karhi's for donating the material needed, Construction Equipment and J. Bean Construction for donating equipment, we have built what we think will be a unique small track (1/12 of a mile).

We have 7 different classes which use four different classes of lawnmowers: Farmboy Stock (up to 12.5hp), Superstock (13-18.5hp), Modified and super modified. The Farmboy Stock lawnmowers are also used in the powder-puff class and the kids class (ages 12-16).

We are having a brand new event this year called the "Redneck Relay", it consists of one lawnmower (Farmboy stock or superstock), three drivers completing five laps each and one pair of coveralls that must be worn by each driver.

This year we will be officially naming the brand new track with a  billboard reveal prior to the race.  We are very excited as to how fast this sport is growing.

All the rules can be found on our Facebook page (Bruce Mines Fall Fair) or by contacting me (Doug) at (705) 971-1382. This years event is held on the Saturday of our Fair (Sept. 7) registration starts at 1 p.m. and racing starts at 4 p.m.
