Laura Wyper, co-organizer of the day-long gardening and environmental fair called Seedy Saturday, says the event was organized to increase local food security.

"We are promoting the idea of saving our own seeds and making sure that people have local, organic, heirloom varieties rather than always concentrating on multinational corporations," Wyper said. "These companies promote the sale of hybrid and genetically modified seeds and take away the power to control what people eat."

Today is the second annual Seedy Saturday and Wyper says participants are already planning the third.

Kids of all ages were playing today with worms while learning about worm composting, or using bones, sticks and other natural materials to make crafts.

The response from vendors and people with a message to spread was phenomenal, Wyper said, and it wouldn't have been possible without the involvement of her co-organizer and SooToday.com gardening guru Suzanne Hanna.

Vendors included many of the people who regularly have healthy, wholesome wares for sale at the Farmers' Market in the summer.

There was also a seed swap, allowing members of the public to buy envelopes of heritage seeds for just 50 cents each.

This evening, the movie King Corn will be screened in the college's multimedia centre in partnership with Cinema Politica, and there will be a panel discussion after the film.

Admission is by donation.
