SAULT STE. MARIE FIRE SERVICES

************************* Carbon monoxide alarm

Fire crews responded to a CO (carbon monoxide) incident at the 100 block of Indiana yesterday morning.

Firefighters found 50 parts per million of CO in the home which was determined to be caused by a malfunctioning gas-fired hot water tank.

The home was ventilated and service personnel were contacted to make the necessary repairs.

************************* Late-night kitchen fire

Fire crews responded to the 200 block of Glasgow Avenue just after midnight to a report of a kitchen fire.

The two occupants were wakened by the smoke alarm and escaped safely.

Firefighters entered and found the stove element had been left on under a frying pan which caused moderate damage to the stove and smoke throughout.

The homeowner sustained minor injuries as result of attempting to extinguish the fire.

Fire Services would like to remind the public that cooking and kitchen fires are the number one cause of all, fires, fire injuries and fire fatalities.

Pay close attention when cooking and never leave cooking unattended.

In both of these incidents a working smoke and CO alarm resulted in the occupants being able to safely escape.
