LSSU alumnus Dr. Timothy Farmer establishes new science scholarship

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - Dr. Timothy A. Farmer, LSSU alumnus, has established a scholarship endowment to benefit LSSU students who are majoring in the physical sciences at Lake Superior State University.

Farmer recently retired as director of general education for the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he served as associate professor of accounting in UMSL's College of Business Administration.

He served as chair of the UMSL Faculty Senate and University Assembly between 2006-08 and received the UMSL Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Service in 2010.

He is a 1979 Lake Superior State University graduate who later earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the Ohio State University.

In 2010, Dr. Farmer received the LSSU Kenneth J. Shouldice Award that honors alumni for their personal and professional achievements.

“I established this endowment fund to offer encouragement to students in their chosen field,” Farmer stated. "Lake Superior was the right place for a shy kid from a small high school. My experience at LSSU was life-changing. The LSSU faculty, provided a challenging yet nurturing environment that set me up for academic and professional success that I never even imagined was possible.”

“We are very grateful to Dr. Farmer for his tremendous generosity,” LSSU President Tony McLain commented. “Scholarship support provides a positive impact on our students and their families as they meet the difficulties of funding their education during these challenging economic times."

Candidates for the scholarship must possess a 3.0 GPA after two or more semesters majoring in chemistry, forensic chemistry, environmental chemistry, environmental science, or geology.  

Award selection is based on a recommendation by the physical sciences faculty.

Lake Superior State University is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, along the U.S./Canada international border.

With an enrollment of about 3,000 students, LSSU offers an undergraduate experience that features small classes, individual attention and faculty/student research opportunities that are not always readily available at larger schools.

LSSU students choose from a blend of liberal and technical studies in more than 40 areas.
