A junkyard fire at the City Limits Auto Parts yard on Three Mile Road near M-129 in the Michigan Soo was brought under control around 8 p.m. last night.

The fire broke out Saturday afternoon and sent a plume of thick black smoke into the air that sometimes extended across the St. Mary's River into the Ontario Sault.

The Soo Township Fire Department received assistance from firefighters from the City of Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan) as well as at least three other township departments.

Other departments had left the scene by 8 p.m. but Soo Township remained there for mop-up operations.

Kathie, a SooToday.com reader and local pilot who flew over the scene yesterday, reported in SooToday.com's News Response forum that the fire appeared to be in a pile of tires.
